Cool Zul wins again at Malaysian Open ’09

Zulmazran Zulkifli successfully defended his title at the 32nd Canon Malaysian International Open today. It was a closely fought battle against a most worthy opponent…Surasak Manuwang of Thailand who earlier had to put up a tough fight against Hong Kong’s Wu Siu Hong in the semi finals.

Zulmazran had earlier disposed off Malaysian youngster Kang Bo Long in the semi finals. He was speechless at his win. All he could say was “I am so happy!”

Carolyn and Zulmazran with their Championships trophies

In the Women’s division, professional bowler Carolyn Ballard from USA had a narrow win over Geraldine Ng of Singapore.

Going into the quarter finals, it looked like the pro bowlers were going to dominate the lanes. Together with Carolyn were Missy Bellinder and Wendy Macpherson of USA and Malaysia’s first pro bowler Shalin Zulkifli.

However, only Carolyn survived to proceed to the semi finals when she defeated another Singaporean Bernice Lim.

20 yr old Indian National scores 1st Perfect Game at Canon 32nd Malaysian International Open

A team of 11 bowlers from India have been in Malaysia for the past 2 months to train under Malaysian National Chief Coach Holloway Cheah. Their efforts paid off handsomely today.

20-yrs old Mayank A. Patel scored his first career perfect game which was also the first 300 game of the on going tournament that will run from March 13-21.

He told us later that his heart was pounding really fast but he was able to remember the advice of his coach …’to take a deep breath’. This calmed him down a bit and he was able to execute the final strike to nail his first 300 game.

Asked how he felt after achieving his first perfect game, he said he didn’t have time to feel anything as he was immediately swarmed by his team mates and well wishers!

More overseas bowlers are expected to arrive over the next few days. Among them will be pro bowlers from different parts of the world including the US and Europe.

For full updates, please follow the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress link found at the top right hand corner of this page.

For candid shots of participants and spectators, follow the ABC Facebook link. (Actually currently facing problems uploading pics and videos there since Facebook upgraded their format! So may take a while for uploads…sorry)

Happy bowling
