Malaysian youths battle it out on the lanes

The SportExcel-Milo-NSC-MTBC Junior Circuit 2009 culminated with a face-off among the top youth bowlers in Malaysia on the lanes at Sunway Pyramid Megalanes, PJ, from 7-9 August, 2009. After a series of 9 Circuit Legs (there were 7 in Peninsular Malaysia and 2 in East Malaysia), a total of 88 youths qualified for the Grand Prix Finals based on Ranking points accumulated over these Circuits.

The battle over 3 days showed a high level of competitiveness among these youths with 16 years’ old Chong Jun Foo of Sarawak showing his supremacy by chalking up 2748 pinfalls over 12 games to give him a 229 average in the Boys Open Category. Hot on his heels was Ahmad Muaz of Kedah with 2695 pinfalls and Shin Chern Yew of Perak with 2668 pinfalls. Only 8 of top 16 Boys qualify for the final knock out round.

In the final face-off, Chong managed to defend his top seed position to emerge the eventual Champion. He rolled down games of 245/256 to beat Ahmad’s 226/210. Ahmad Muaz maintained his second spot with Kua Jian Wen of Kuala Lumpur on third position and Teh Lit Qing of Perak on fourth position.

In the Girls Open Category, seasoned campaigner Syaidatul Afifah of Perak upset top seed Nursyamimi Supardi, also from Perak to lift the Girls Open Championship title. Nursyamimi had earlier chalked up 2498 pinfalls to take top spot. Syaidatul was on 2482 pinfalls with Nur Shamira of Kuala Lumpur on third spot with 2402 pinfalls and Fatin Hazwani of Penang on fourth with 2401 pinfalls. Syaidatul’s 235/245 series were just too good to upset Nursyamimi’s 225/200.

With the upset win, Nursyamimi had to be content with second placing and Nur Shamira maintained her third position. Lim Hsu Zen of Negri Sembilan made up the top four.

Another upset was in store in the Boys Graded Division. Top seed Mohd Azlan of Perak lost in the step ladder finals to second seed Dinie Faliq of Malacca. Although both boys did not roll high games, Dinie’s 217/180 series was good enough to beat Azlan’s poor 171/149 games. Azry Haziq of Selangor climbed from eighth position to third spot. Ahmad Adil of Kuala Lumpur made up the top four Boys Graded winners.

The third upset of the day came in the form of Puteri Nadia of Negri Sembilan when she throunced top seed Natasha Roslan of Selangor with games of 237/195. Natasha had a tame 176/172 series. Siti Farahain of Sabah and Syaidatul Afyna of Perak made up the top 4 winners in the Girls Graded cathegory.

Mohd Qayyum of Negri Sembilan and Nur Ain Mustaffa of Kedah were the eventual Champions in the Under-12 Boys and Girls Categories.

Two Perfect Games’ awards of RM1000 were also presented to two Sarawak youths. Daniel Tan achieved the first perfect game during the Graded step ladder finals at the Sabah Leg, while Chong Jun Foo shot the second perfect game of the Junior Circuit during the first block of six games of the GP Finals.

20 yr old Indian National scores 1st Perfect Game at Canon 32nd Malaysian International Open

A team of 11 bowlers from India have been in Malaysia for the past 2 months to train under Malaysian National Chief Coach Holloway Cheah. Their efforts paid off handsomely today.

20-yrs old Mayank A. Patel scored his first career perfect game which was also the first 300 game of the on going tournament that will run from March 13-21.

He told us later that his heart was pounding really fast but he was able to remember the advice of his coach …’to take a deep breath’. This calmed him down a bit and he was able to execute the final strike to nail his first 300 game.

Asked how he felt after achieving his first perfect game, he said he didn’t have time to feel anything as he was immediately swarmed by his team mates and well wishers!

More overseas bowlers are expected to arrive over the next few days. Among them will be pro bowlers from different parts of the world including the US and Europe.
